Water Baptism

WATER BAPTISM: We believe that Jesus Christ committed the ordinance of water baptism to His Church139.  This is a baptism into Christ not into the church140.

The Bible declares that after repenting of one’s sins and receiving Christ’s gift of salvation a born-again believer should be baptized through their immersion in water.  In the New Testament church, every born-again believer is commanded to be baptized141.  Water baptism symbolizes the following:

1. The Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ Jesus (Romans 6:3-11; 1 Peter 3:21).  Immersion in water is the only physical act that pictures this so beautifully and accurately.
2. Forgiveness and removal of sins (Acts 2:38 & 22:16).
3. Circumcision of the Heart (Romans 2:29; Colossians 2:8-12).

139. Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16
140. Matthew 28:19; Acts 10:48; Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:26-28; Colossians 2:12
141. Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38, 8:12, 8:35-38, 10:47-48 & 19:3-5
